Program note:

Clarinetist Nancy Braithwaite has been a frequent supporter of my music. She has commissioned and premiered the following works of mine.

1. Yo Picasso (1997) for clarinet, viola, cello and piano
2. Octet in D, opus 144 (2012) for clarinet, bassoon, horn, string quartet and double bass
3. Clarinet Quintet (2013) for clarinet and string quartet
4. La Serenissima (2013) 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons
5. Alice (2015) mezzo-soprano, clarinet, violin, viola and cello

B.A.C.H. (2018) for clarinet and piano is dedicated to Nancy. The opening clarinet solo employs the notes Bb, A, C and B natural, which spells out the name Bach. In keeping with the Bach association, the form of this work is built on the dance baroque suite:

4. Sarabande ... Largo
5. Gavotte ... Allegretto
6. Gigue ... Presto

Thomas Oboe Lee was born in China in 1945. He lived in São Paulo, Brazil, for six years before coming to the United States in 1966. After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, he studied composition at the New England Conservatory and Harvard University.
