about

Last fall Eric Hewitt and the Boston Conservatory Wind Ensemble went into a studio and recorded my work for double wind quintet, La Serenissima (2013). I was very pleased with the outcome. In a gesture of gratitude I offered to write a new work for him and his group. Eric was thrilled. I told him I have always admired the Stravinsky Octet and that I would write something with the same instrumentation. Eric said that would be a great idea, and that he might program Igor’s work alongside mine for a program in the 2015-2016 season at the Boston Conservatory.

I began my Octet in early June. In the midst of the second movement I found out that Gunther Schuller, my teacher, mentor and musical “godfather,” had suddenly died on June 21 at the age of 89. I was heartbroken and I immediately thought I should refashion my octet into a tribute to his memory.

I went back to the beginning of the work and decided that I should set all the melodies with texts from the Latin Requiem Mass: music with words, but with unsung texts. As luck would have it, I had to make only very small changes in the melodies to accommodate the texts in the first two movements, Requiem aeternam dona eis and Dies irae, dies illa.

For the rest of the work I am using the usual Requiem text, minus the ordinary of the Mass. That is, the Kyrie, the Sanctus, and the Agnus Dei will not appear in this work.

Requiem Octet … In Memoriam Gunther Schuller (2015) is in eight movement and is scored for flute, clarinet, 2 bassoons, 2 trumpets (in C and Bb), and 2 trombones (tenor and bass).
