Tunesmith ... An American Beauty Pageant (1993)

by Thomas Oboe Lee

Tunesmith ... (1993) was jointly commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo with a grant from the Weinstock Artist-in-residence Fund and the Dance Theater Workshop's Bessie Schönberg Theater with funds from the Joyce Mertz-Gilmore Foundation.

The four-movement work is inspired by the "classical" violin-piano sonatas of Bach, Mozart, Schubert, Debussy and Stravinsky, and with deep affection for jazz-violinists like Joe Venuti, Ray Nance and Stuff Smith. The end-result is a work fusing musical ideas from the Old World with ideas from the New. Although each movement has a very distinctive "style" or "sound" of its own, and not necessarily related to each other, the whole presents, I hope, a "narrative" the listener can follow with pleasure and no difficulty. The form is quite "conventional" in the 19th-century Romantic four-movement sonata mold.
