Non ho mai tanto desiderato d'essere folle quanto adesso. Soltanto la follia può darci tutto ciò che la sorte ci ha negato. La ricchezza, la gioia. Per i pazzi, il possesso dei bene non è illusorio, nè immaginario il compimento dei desiderii. La felicità è raggiunta. Sarà fatto d'uno straccio qualunque, il bimbo a cui una povera madre pazza dà il latte del suo seno; ma che importa? Ella ha veramente da quello straccio tutta la gioia della maternità. Sarebbe la più crudele delle crudeltà dire a questa madre: "Svegliate, tu stai sognando!" Tutti, dormendo, siamo folli. Ora, se il sogno è una breve follia, pensa che la follia è un lungo sogno, e immagina come debbano essere beati i folli.

I never wished so much to be insane as I do now. Only madness can give us what fate has denied. Riches, joy … For the insane, the possession of goods is not illusory, nor is the fulfillment of our desires. Happiness is achieved. The baby to whom a poor insane mother gives the milk of her breast might well be made out of just a rag—-but what does it matter? She has from that rag truly the whole joy of motherhood! It would be the cruelest of cruelty to say to that mother: "Wake up, you are dreaming!" We all, when we dream, are insane. Now, if a dream is a brief insanity, think that insanity is a long dream, and imagine how happy the insane must be.
