Erwach, o Licht des Gesanges

lyrics

Erwach, o Licht des Gesanges,
O licht der Erinnerung!
Rings am Himmel ist banges
Gewölk der Trauer genung.

Es soll in meinem Herzen
Nicht auch noch finster seyn.
Dazu in der Nacht hat man Kerzen,
Wenn aus ist Sonnonschein.

Den Schein der Sonn' ersetzen,
O Kerze, kanst du nicht;
Doch kann das Auge sich letzen
An keinem anderen Licht.

Ich zag' ums Herz, wie lang es
Ist ohne Freudenschwung;
Erwach, o Licht des Gesanges,
O licht der Beseligung!

Wach, holden Überschwanges,
O licht der Erinnerung,
Bis ich beschwichtigten Dranges
Schlaf ein in Dämmerung!

...

Awake, O light of song,
O light of memory!
Around the sky there are
Fearful clouds of sadness.

It should be in my heart
Not to be dark.
At night you have candles,
When the sunshine is gone.

Replace the glow of the sun
Oh candle, you cannot;
But the eye can see for itself
When there is no other light.

My heart is broken,
How long it's been without joy;
Awake, O light of song,
O light of bliss!

Awake, sweet exuberance
O light of memory
Until a soothing urge
Lets me fall asleep at dusk!
