Non può immaginarti le feste che mi sta facendo Parigi fino dal mio arrivo. Ne sono profondamente commosso, tanto più quanto le comparo con quelle che mi ha fatto l'italia. Al ricevimento del "Figaro" erano più di mille cinquecento persone: tutte le maggiori personalità delle politica e delle lettere, tutte le più grandi dame di Parigi, Ministri, Ambasciatori, Accademici, tutti i maggiori rappresentanti del teatro francese, autori, direttori e attrici.

Sto respirando in un'atmosfera accesa d'entusiasmo per me. Questo può farlo solo Parigi, quando ama qualcuno. Son sicuro che non avrebbero fatto altrettanto, se il premio Nobel fosse toccato a un francese: me l’ha detto apertamente Pierre Benoit.

You cannot imagine the expressions of welcome that Paris has been giving me since my arrival. I am deeply moved by it, even more when I compare them with those Italy gave me. At the reception at the Figaro, there were more than 1,500 people: all the major personalities of politics and letters, all the most famous ladies of Paris, ministers, ambassadors, academicians, all the major representatives of the French theater, playwrights, directors, actors and actresses. Crémieux told me that nothing like that had ever been seen before. The next morning I was honored at the Paris-Soir, the newspaper with the widest circulation in France; the director gave a speech in my honor and then all the editors and co-workers attended a luncheon that the newspaper was giving for me.

Yesterday the newspaper L’Intransigeant did the same. And this morning I was honored at the Société des Auteurs.

I’m breathing an atmosphere that is enthusiastic about me. This is something only Paris can do, when she loves someone. I'm sure they would not have done as much if the Nobel Prize had been awarded to a Frenchman; Pierre Benoit openly told me so.

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, he studied composition at the New England Conservatory and Harvard University.
