Doch am Morgen kommt die Sonne,

Aber ihr, o meiner Tage

Schwalbe wandert im September,
Im Oktober Nachtigall,
Doch die Schwalbe kehrt im Merze,
Nachtigall im Mai zurück.
Euch, die Nachtigall und Schwalbe
Dieses Hauses, dieser Flur,
Bringt zum Haus der Merz nicht wieder,
Noch der Mai zur Flur zurück.

Mit dem Frühling starb das Veilchen,
Und die Rose vor dem Herbst;
Ros’ und Veilchen in dem Garten

After graduating from the University of Pittsburgh, he studied composition at the New England Conservatory and Harvard University.
